The legendary “Omae Wa Mou Shindeiru” (translated as “You are already dead”) meme from the 1980s martial arts anime Fist of the North Star (Hokuto no Ken).
The meme features the main character, Kenshiro, a lethal martial artist who strikes his opponents’ pressure points. In the iconic scene, after unleashing a flurry of rapid punches, Kenshiro calmly walks away. His opponent, confused and seemingly unharmed, mocks him. Kenshiro then delivers his cold, signature line: “Omae wa mou shindeiru.”
Immediately after, the opponent responds with a high-pitched, panicked “Nani?!” (which means “What?!” in Japanese). It covers his iconic battles against rivals like Shin, the tragic Rei, and his power-hungry adoptive brothers, culminating in the legendary, apocalyptic showdown against his ultimate rival and eldest brother, Raoh, the King of Fists.
Directly following the original’s conclusion, Fist of the North Star 2 (1987–1988) picked up the story with a 43-episode run. Set several years after the defeat of Raoh, the world is now oppressed by the Emperor of the Heavenly Prime School (Gento Kōken). A matured Kenshiro reunites with his now-grown companions, Bat and Lin, who have formed a resistance army. This series expands the lore significantly, taking Kenshiro across the sea to the mysterious and brutal Land of Asura, his actual birthplace, where he must confront the dark origins of his martial art and face three terrifying demonic governors.
The franchise shifted toward modern theatrical quality with Fist of the North Star: The Legends of the True Savior (2006–2008), a five-part multimedia project consisting of three theatrical feature films and two direct-to-video (OVA) episodes. Rather than a standard continuation, this series reimagines and fills in the gaps of the original story with high-budget animation. It offers deeper perspectives on key characters, dedicating individual films to the tragic heroism of Raoh, the noble sacrifice of Toki, and the untold struggles of Yuria, giving the classic 80s narrative a cinematic, emotional upgrade.
Taking a massive detour into comedy, DD Fist of the North Star (2011, 2013, 2015) reboots the franchise as a parody. In this alternate universe, the nuclear apocalypse of 199X never actually happened, leaving the deadly martial artists completely useless in a peaceful, modern-day Japan. A super-deformed (chibi) Kenshiro, Raoh, and Toki find themselves living together in a cramped apartment, working part-time jobs at a convenience store, and fighting over mundane things like groceries instead of world domination.
Another notable comedic spin-off is Fist of the North Star: Strawberry Flavor (2015), a short-form anime series based on a gag manga. This series focuses entirely on the holy emperor Souther, one of the original show’s most brutal and intimidating villains, completely twisting his personality into a flamboyant, eccentric, and deeply bizarre character. It parodies his famous dialogue and relationships with the other cast members, turning the otherwise bleak and violent universe into a ridiculous slice-of-life comedy.
The franchise returned to its serious roots with Souten no Ken (Fist of the Blue Sky, 2006–2007), a 26-episode prequel series set in the 1930s.
